Geometrical Origin and Theory of Negative Thermal Expansion in Framework Structures
نویسندگان
چکیده
By framework structures are meant materials consisting of relatively stiff units such as octahedra or tetrahedra, joined by shared oxygen (or other) atoms at the corners. Examples are ZrW2O8 and many aluminosilicates. Rigid rotation of the units often gives a reduction of the volume or of some lattice constant as a purely geometrical effect. The theory of this effect is developed and shown to give a negative contribution to the thermal expansion coefficient. This is in addition to the usual positive contribution from anharmonicity of the interatomic forces. The negative effect varies through the phonon spectrum, being strongest for low frequencies, but the sign of the temperature coefficient may be reversed above a soft mode phase transition.

Nonlinear Dynamic Response of Functionally Graded Porous Plates on Elastic Foundation Subjected to Thermal and Mechanical Loads
In this paper, the first-order shear deformation theory is used to derive theoretical formulations illustrating the nonlinear dynamic response of functionally graded porous plates under thermal and mechanical loadings supported by Pasternak’s model of the elastic foundation. Two types of porosity including evenly distributed porosities (Porosity-I) and unevenly distributed porosities (Porosity-...

Quartz was selected for study as an archetypal material with a framework structure of sti...
متن کاملOrigin of the Exceptional Negative Thermal Expansion in Metal-Organic Framework-5 Zn4O(1,4-benzenedicarboxylate)3
Metal organic framework-5 (MOF-5)was recently suggested to possess an exceptionally large negative thermal-expansion coefficient. Our direct experimental measurement of the thermal expansion of MOF-5 using neutron powder diffraction, in the temperature range of 4 to 600 K, shows that the linear thermalexpansion coefficient is ≈−16×10−6 K−1. To understand the origin of this large negative therma...
متن کاملSwitching Between Giant Positive and Negative Thermal Expansions of a YFe(CN)6 -based Prussian Blue Analogue Induced by Guest Species.
The control of thermal expansion of solid compounds is intriguing but remains challenging. The effect of guests on the thermal expansion of open-framework structures was investigated. Notably, the presence of guest ions (K+ ) and molecules (H2 O) can substantially switch thermal expansion of YFe(CN)6 from negative (αv =-33.67×10-6 K-1 ) to positive (αv =+42.72×10-6 K-1 )-a range that covers t...
متن کاملLightweight Mechanical Metamaterials with Tunable Negative Thermal Expansion.
Ice floating on water is a great manifestation of negative thermal expansion (NTE) in nature. The limited examples of natural materials possessing NTE have stimulated research on engineered structures. Previous studies on NTE structures were mostly focused on theoretical design with limited experimental demonstration in two-dimensional planar geometries. In this work, aided with multimaterial p...
